Dr. Melvin C. Haddad was born in Kinston, N.C. on March 29, 1942. He is the son of Lebanese immigrants. After graduating from Grainger High School in 1959, he attended Clemson College and the University of Georgia, where he received his degree in veterinary medicine in 1967.
After graduation, he entered the Army Veterinary Corps and received specialized training as a food inspector. He served as the 25th Division veterinarian in Vietnam from June 1968-June 1969. Captain Haddad was responsible for food safety, caring for scout and security dogs as well as a combat tracker dog team. Captain Haddad was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Medic Badge for treating wounded G.I.'s under hostile condtions when no other medical personel were available.
Upon returning to Boston in 1969, he married Maryrose Kelliher and worked for Dr. Bruce in Dedham and Holbrook Animal Hospital prior to opening his veterinary clinic in Brockton in 1975. Dr. Haddad has two sons, Brian and Terrence. Dr. and Mrs. Haddad worked side by side growing the successful practice that has served the community for over 30 years. Mrs Haddad died in 1994 after a short battle with breast cancer. Mrs. Haddad's contributions to North Main Street Veterinary Clinic continue to be missed.
In April 2001, Dr. Haddad remarried. His wife, Pamela, is a retired elementary school teacher. Pam and "Doc" share their home with a cocker spaniel. They also have 2 beautiful grandchildren, who are filling their days with love and lots of fun.
Dr. Haddad recently attended the 35th reunion of his graduation from veterinary school and a dedication of a memorial for the tracker dogs in Fort Benning, Georgia. At the emotional dedication, Dr. Haddad was reunited with two dog handlers who saved his life during a ground attack in Vietnam in March of 1969.
There are days now when "Doc" thinks about retirement and looks forward to spending his days on the golf course, but for now he remains committed to his clients, patients and his staff.
